Quality child care is a necessity for many families in North Carolina, and it is also a significant expense. How does CCR&amp;R improve the quality of child care services in North Carolina?

Support is provided by CCR&amp;R agencies to the community at large in a number of ways, including:
<ul>
<li>State Child Care Facts and Figures</li>
<li>Child Care Research</li>
<li>Child Care Supply and Demand</li>
<li>Data Collection, Analysis, and Dissemination: Provision of varied and comprehensive data to identify community needs as well as to shape/refine service delivery and inform public policy. Examples of data collected and analyzed include:
<ul>
<li>Child care program supply and parental demand</li>
<li>Number of referrals made to both preschoolers and school-agers</li>
<li>Type and number of programs and their licensing status</li>
<li>Child care fees/rates</li>
<li>Child care vacancies</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Advocacy: Promotion of community involvement, planning, and work to make high-quality child care a reality for all children. Examples of advocacy efforts include:
<ul>
<li>Education around issues that affect children and communities</li>
<li>Involvement with child-serving groups</li>
<li>Awareness around legislative agendas and contact information for elected officials</li>
</ul>

Each year, CCR&amp;R agencies help thousands of families, child care professionals and businesses in North Carolina.
<ul>
<li>Nearly 40,000 children (more than 21,000 families) per year are connected to resources that enable their parents to work, go to school and support their families.</li>
<li>More than 6,100 child care classrooms per year improve or maintain the quality of their services to children and families or newly obtain licensure to serve families.</li>
<li>More than 24,000 child care professionals per year increase their knowledge and learn new strategies to improve the child care environment and the experiences of the children in their care.1</li>
<li>71% of all NC children enrolled in regulated child care attend high-quality 4- and 5-star programs, up from 33% in 2003 due to the collective efforts of CCR&amp;R agencies.2</li>
</ul>

In 2021, as a result of statewide CCR&R:

28,610 children in working families received education and assistance finding child care and school age care.

4,451 child care classrooms, homes in early care and school age programs received technical assistance to improve or maintain their quality.

17,805 early care and school age professionals received training and professional development.

For Families:
<ul>
<li>In North Carolina, an estimated 66% of children under the age of 6 and 67% of children aged 6-12 live in homes where all parents work, resulting in a significant need for child care.1</li>
<li>On average, young children with working mothers spend 36 hours a week in child care.2</li>
<li>The average cost of center care for a preschooler consumes 40% of the median income for a single-parent family and more than 10% for a two-parent family.2</li>
<li>North Carolina ranks 15th in resources spent on public preschool in the State of Preschool 2021 report by the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER).3</li>
</ul>
For Childhood Development:
<ul>
<li>In August 2019, the American Academy of Pediatrics&#8217; Council on Early Childhood released a report that supports how quality child care improves physical and cognitive outcomes on children which can result in enhanced school readiness.4
<ul>
<li>In North Carolina, 7 out of every 10 children in child care have access to quality care (4- or 5-star care).4</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
For the Economy:
<ul>
<li>North Carolina has 5,598 regulated child care programs employing approximately 36,753 individuals.5 These businesses contribute massively to the state’s economy by purchasing goods and services in their communities.</li>
