Supporting teachers to promote healthy social-emotional development and reduce the expulsion rate among young children in licensed child care centers across North Carolina.

The Healthy Social Behaviors Project (HSB) was established in 2005 to address behavioral issues in young children through services that help to identify, prevent and modify challenging behaviors, with the goal of reducing the expulsion rate and promoting healthy social-emotional development for all children in NC licensed child care centers.
We support North Carolina DCDEE-licensed child care centers serving children ages 0 to 5 years old, including NC Pre-K Classrooms, Early Head Start and Head Start Programs, Developmental Day Programs and GS 110-106 centers, focusing on teacher practices that can calm challenging behaviors.
<ul>
<li>Research shows that between the ages of 2 and 5 the brain is primed and ready to learn to manage impulses and emotions.</li>
<li>Between 10-25% of young children display challenging behavior inappropriate for their developmental level. Teachers now report that children’s disruptive behavior is the single biggest challenge they face in the classroom.</li>
<li>In North Carolina, 15% of pre-kindergarten teachers expelled at least one child over the past year.</li>
</ul>

The Healthy Social Behaviors team provides teachers and child care providers with technical assistance (TA), coaching, and training based on the Pyramid Model, a conceptual framework of evidence-based practices for promoting healthy social and emotional development in young children.

Preventive strategies for targeted social and emotional supports and intensive interventions are also available. The HSB Project team’s strategies for technical assistance and coaching align with North Carolina Foundations for Early Learning and Development and support requirements of the Environment Rating Scales to meet the needs of children in our state.
Technical assistance and coaching programs include:
<ul>
<li>Social Emotional Teaching Strategies (SETS) Technical Assistance: This year-long program provides knowledge about foundational strategies for pro-social classrooms along with ready-to-use materials to support those strategies.</li>
<li>Technical Assistance for Challenging Behaviors: This program addresses specific challenging behaviors in a classroom.</li>
<li>Pyramid Model Fidelity Coaching: This coaching program provides intensive training and weekly TA visits to any 0-5 classrooms interested in implementing the Pyramid Model to fidelity. Follow-up assistance to sustain Pyramid Model practices post-coaching is also provided.</li>

HSB Training Descriptions

The HSB Project offers CEU level training and contact credit hour training. Training is available face-to-face, online through Zoom and/or asynchronously through an online learning platform.
All training is based on Pyramid Model foundations and aligns with North Carolina Foundations for Early Learning and Development to meet the needs of children in our state.
Please refer to the HSB Training Descriptions for more detailed information on each training course offered. Registration fees vary based on agency and training type. HSB is also responsible for fulfilling DCDEE Administrative Actions based on discipline issues.
